What is WebDAV?

WebDAV is an Internet Engineering Task Force working group. The abbreviation stands for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning. The term is also used to refer to the protocol (more accurately, the extension to the HTTP protocol) which the group defined.

The WebDAV protocol's aim is to make the World Wide Web a readable and writable medium, in line with Tim Berners-Lee's original vision. It provides functionality to create, change and move documents on a remote server (typically a web server). This is useful, among other things, for authoring the documents which a web server serves, but can also be used for general web-based file storage, that can be accessed from anywhere. Most modern operating systems provide built-in support for WebDAV, making it as easy to use files on a WebDAV server (almost) as if they were stored in a local directory.

How does A2 Hosting support WebDAV?

WebDAV support is provided through the built-in 'Web Disk' feature of cPanel 11. cPanel Web Disk allows you to easily connect to your site for drag-and-drop file transfers. Once connected to the server, your WebDisk will appear as an additional drive within your local file system giving you the ability to manage your remote files as you would manage files on your local machine without using an FTP client. You can connect to your primary cPanel Web Disk using your main cPanel username and password or you can create additional Web Disks and limit access to specific directories.

cPanel Web Disk setup is quick and easy. Just go to cPanel->Web Disk, enter a login name, password and set the directory for that WebDisk. cPanel will automatically generate connection scripts for Windows®, Mac® and Linux® platforms so that you can load up your WebDisk with a single click of the mouse!
