Overview
Wikis have become massively popular on the web as a platform for collaboration, project development and management, community discussion, online education and much more. Among wiki software packages, MediaWiki is one of the most popular with thousands of sites using MediaWiki worldwide including the largest user-contributed encyclopedia on the Internet, Wikipedia. We even run our own user-driven A2 Hosting Wiki using MediaWiki.
Media Wiki is an extremely powerful, scalable software and a feature-rich wiki implementation. MediaWiki uses PHP to process and display data stored in its MySQL database.
Pages use MediaWiki's wikitext format so that users without knowledge of XHTML or CSS can edit them easily.
MediaWiki tracks the history of pages by writing edits to the database, thus allowing easy reverts in case of vandalism or spamming. Media Wiki can manage image and multimedia files, too, which are stored in the filesystem. For large wikis with lots of users, MediaWiki supports caching for improved performance.
