What is OpenVZ Hosting?

OpenVZ Hosting's Burstable Memory

Every OpenVZ hosting account includes a set amount of dedicated memory that will always be available. Each OpenVZ account also includes burstable memory. This is the amount of memory that can be used or "bursted to" if a VPS account starts to run low on dedicated memory. Burstable memory is the reason why OpenVZ accounts continue to perform at top levels even when reaching memory limits.

Unlike dedicated memory, burstable memory is not guaranteed. It is only available on a VPS server if there is enough free memory because other VPS host customers are not utilizing their allocated dedicated memory at that moment. OpenVZ uses a similar technique when handling contention for CPU processing.

Burstable Memory Example
A VPS account can include a total of 512MB of memory with 256MB of dedicated memory and another 256MB of non-guaranteed burstable memory. If an OpenVZ account reaches its 256MB dedicated memory limit, the OpenVZ Host account can pull from burstable memory on the VPS server. The caveat is burstable memory is available only if other accounts on the server are not using all of their allocated dedicated memory.
